We have the distinct pleasure of welcoming WaterHigh to our Kitty Hawk Kites and Kitty Hawk Surf Co. stores. Watch the video above to learn their stellar story. Their mission is to celebrate H2O, sell lots of gear, and give back to organizations making a difference in global water issues.
When people think of the Outer Banks, one of the first things they think of is flight. As home to the Wright Brother’s National Memorial and boasting the title of Birthplace of Flight, the Outer Banks has a rich history with human’s pursuit to fly through the sky like a bird.
Since 1974, Kitty Hawk Kites has been providing that opportunity to the world. Hang Gliding is a thrilling and freeing experience. As the largest hang gliding school in the world, we have taught over 400,000 students ranging in age from 4 to 92. That makes this adventure perfect for families and groups of all ages.
Now that the Outer Banks summer season is in full swing, so is our hang gliding schedule. Our instructors are excited to teach you how to fly! Our dune hang gliding lessons take place at Jockey’s Ridge State Park in Nags Head. The dunes of Jockey’s Ridge allow us to take advantage of the smooth and consistent ocean breezes and give us soft sand for landings. We also operate out of the Cotton Gin in Jarvisburg, where we offer tandem hang gliding flights that climb to altitudes over 2000 feet. Book your flights below.
As always, safety is our number one concern. In addition to our standard safety protocols, we have increased our cleaning procedures, we are requiring our crew to wear masks, and are implementing social distancing practices to keep our students and instructors safe and healthy. You can read more about what we’re doing to stop the spread of COVID-19 in this notice.
The Outer Banks is as beautiful as ever. Now that we’ve started our season, we’ve seen a flood of visitors to the island. With these larger crowds, many visitors are looking for safe, socially distant activities to do on the Outer Banks. So some of our crew members are practicing social distancing by experiencing some of Kitty Hawk Kites’ adventures. Follow along for inspiration and see all the fun things you can still do on the Outer Banks. Today Megan went out kayaking with her dog, Pilot!
We offer guided kayak tours in single and tandem kayaks for families looking to explore the great outdoors together. We also rent kayaks! Go out on your own in a single kayak or share your trip in a tandem kayak.
Both sit-in kayaks and sit-on-top kayaks are available! Sit-in kayaks are traditionally used in the sound of the Outer Banks whereas sit-on-top kayaks are more versatile and can be used in both the sound and ocean. It is recommended that only professionals take sit-in kayaks into the Ocean. They are great for exploring–they come with a comfortable padded seat and back support.
Share the fun!
When you go out on your adventure, make sure you take some pictures or videos. Tag us @kittyhawkkites on social media to share your joy for kayaking and for a chance to be featured!
Even though travel restrictions have been lifted, we are still taking safety concerns seriously. So we are putting together a collection of our favorite activities that you can do while social distancing. We hope you’ll take these ideas as inspiration. It’s our mission to create fun and memorable activities for you and your family. Even when we have to stay six-feet apart, we are determined to teach the world to fly! So of course, we had to start with kite flying!
Flying kites is a great activity to do by yourself or with your close friends and family. And you can do it anywhere with a little wind. You can find kites of every shape, style, color, and experience level in our stores and online.
