August 15 marks an important milestone in the history of flight, the anniversary of the invention of the flexible wing, a breakthrough that changed the skies forever.
The Flexible Wing
Developed by NASA engineer Francis Rogallo in the mid-20th century, the flexible wing (also known as the Rogallo Wing) laid the groundwork for modern hang gliding, powered paragliding, and even the early concepts for spacecraft recovery. Rogallo’s invention was simple yet revolutionary, inspiring generations of aviators, adventurers, and innovators.
Unlike rigid wings, the flexible wing could shift shape in flight, allowing it to adapt to changing air currents and maintain lift even in unstable conditions. This aerodynamic flexibility gave it unique advantages in both performance and control, sparking new possibilities in aviation design.
At Kitty Hawk Kites, we owe much of what we do to Rogallo’s vision. From our hang-gliding lessons to our aerial events, his spirit of innovation and exploration is at the core of everything we do. And this year, we’re especially excited to honor that legacy in several meaningful ways!

Mark your calendars: August 18 is the national premiere of Wingman on PBS, a brand-new documentary that dives into the life, work, and enduring influence of Francis Rogallo.
This film, written and produced by Clay Johnson, explores how a simple backyard experiment evolved into a concept that helped shape the future of flight. Featuring rare archival footage and interviews with experts and enthusiasts, Wingman brings Rogallo’s story to life like never before. Funding for the film was generously provided by the Rogallo Foundation.

Proceeds from Brewtag go directly toward the Rogallo Foundation’s goal of building a world-class Aviation Center to educate and inspire future generations about the science and spirit of flight!
