Can’t-Miss Festivals 

The Outer Banks comes alive with community events all summer long. Here are some of the top festivals to look forward to in Nags Head! 

Hang Gliding Spectacular: 

May 15-18, 2025 – Jockeys Ridge Crossing

A celebration of the sport that started it all, this event is one of the longest-running hang-gliding competitions in the world and showcases the thrill of flight on the East Coast’s tallest dune.

Kids Days:

June 9-August 8, 2025 – Jockeys Ridge Crossing 

Held weekly throughout the summer at several Kitty Hawk Kites locations, Kids Days are jam-packed with fun, including games, face painting, rock climbing, and interactive exhibits. 

Sunset Festivals

June 9-August 8, 2025 – Jockeys Ridge Crossing

Celebrate the magic of golden hour with music, food vendors, local artists, and games, all with a stunning view of the sun setting over the sound. 

Kite Festivals: 

June 6-7, September 12-13, 2025 – Jockeys Ridge State Park

Nothing says OBX like a sky filled with colorful kites! We host several kite festivals each year that celebrate wind-powered fun for the whole family. 

Watermelon Festival

August 1, 2025 – Jockeys Ridge Crossing

A local favorite, this summertime event is full of games, contests, watermelon-themed treats, and of course, all-you-can-eat watermelon! 

Pirate Festival: 

August 14-15, 2025 – Jockeys Ridge Crossing

Ahoy, mateys! Step back into the Golden Age of Piracy with pirate reenactments, scavenger hunts, and pirate-themed crafts for the little buccaneers. 

Outer Banks Brewtag:

October 25, 2025 – Soundside Event Site

A celebration of flight and beer, our 9th Annual OBX Brewtag contestants will be competing to see who can launch and fly an empty 1/6 keg barrel the furthest!

Nags Head is home to some of the most iconic and scenic locations in the Outer Banks. Be sure to check out: 

Jockey’s Ridge State Park: The tallest living sand dunes on the East Coast. Perfect for kite flying, sunset watching, or learning to hang glide. 

Jennette’s Pier: A great spot for fishing, walking, or enjoying the view. The pier also hosts educational exhibits and events. 

Dowdy Park: This family-friendly park features playgrounds, green space, a pavilion, and often hosts craft markets and community events. 

Tanger Outlet Shops: Name-brand stores offering great deals, perfect for a rainy-day activity or a little retail therapy. 

Wright Brothers National Memorial: Take a walk-through aviation history at the site of the world’s first powered flight.
