Costumes and core values (and a turkey spinner)

Plastered on walls and doors and filing cabinets and printers and whiteboards and refrigerator doors throughout stores worldwide (okay, the Outer Banks and our two Florida locations…) are 11×17 posters that outline our company’s core values. These posters do a good job of reminding those of us in the family of employees who we are and what we’re supposed to become.

Appropriately, the first value on that list is FUN. Of all the things we are and strive to be, FUN is first and foremost. How’s that for strategy? Hey, it’s worked for us for 37 years. And if we were to wax philosophical for a moment or two, we’d posit (you can use words like posit when you’re waxing philosophical, you know) that other companies would do well to make having fun a top strategic priority. If you’re looking for , look no further. We’ve sealed the deal, so to speak.

As you might have guessed, then, Halloween is a pretty big deal around here.

Exhibit A:

Costumes and core values (and a turkey spinner)

Way to live the core values, Kites team!

And just in case you’re wondering, the rest of the core values list includes: QUALITY, CUSTOMER SERVICE, EXCELLENCE, SAFETY, and VALUE.

Lastly, we’re sad to report that nobody dressed (no pun intended) as a turkey yesterday, but while we’re talking turkey, we have to mention that you’re going to definitely want this turkey spinner for Thanksgiving. Remember, we’ve got one of the largest selections of kites, flags, spinners, and windart anywhere on the Web. Click on over today.

$7,476 and three van loads of supplies for Hurricane Irene relief

$3,738 in customer donations, $3,738 in dollar-for-dollar matches, three van loads of customer- and community-donated supplies, and the support of the entire family made it possible for us to provide some much-needed relief for our friends and neighbors impacted by Hurricane Irene.

All donations were given directly to the Outer Banks Interfaith Community Outreach and stay right here on the Outer Banks.

Thanks for your generosity, everybody. This is a fantastic community-sponsored accomplishment that wouldn’t have been possible without your kindness.

We’re in your debt!

Presenting a check to the Outer Banks Interfaith Community Outreach. And we're going to get in big trouble for using this image 'cause we said we wouldn't. But it was just too cheesy not to share.

10/24 + 1911 + 9:45 = Soaring 100 Celebration

Whew, that’s a pretty complicated formula. Know what’s not complicated? The decision to come to the celebration October 21-24th!

What, you might be asking, is all this Soaring 100 hullabaloo about? In a nutshell: ’s world-record setting 1911 glider flight that impacted forever the science and sport of flying. While Orville’s foundational flight only lasted 9 minutes and 45 seconds (a record that stood for ten years), its legacy lives in every hang glider that glides and every sailplane that sails. And we’re celebrating that legacy at Soaring 100. Okay, so you probably couldn’t really fit all that into a nutshell.

10/24 + 1911 + 9:45 = Soaring 100 Celebration

Since this blog has garnered no small amount of fame for its handy, timely, and insightful top ten lists, we decided to bring you…

“The Top Ten Reasons to Come to Soaring 100″

#10: Souvenir mail delivered by glider at Jockey’s Ridge State Park! (Word on the street is they’re sending it “air mail”)

#9: The “Driven to Explore” exhibit, complete with a three-billion year-old moon rock you can actually touch.

#8: A symposium on early motorless flight that’s been coordinated by the senior curator of the Smithsonian’s Air and Space Museum.

#7: A glider-building workshop and time aloft contest for youngsters.
