Kites and Beer … Plenty of Reason to Celebrate in April

April has finally arrived and there is plenty of reason to celebrate! For those who enjoy tracking bizarre and unique holidays, you may be reveling in the fact that it’s National Humor Month, Lawn and Garden Month and National Poetry Month. But don’t worry … we won’t attempt to tell any bad jokes, educate you on tending to your blooming flower bulbs, or craft a haiku. What we WILL do is launch a kite and raise a pint in honor of National Kite Month and North Carolina Beer Month!

NATIONAL KITE MONTH
Every year in April Kite enthusiasts across North America celebrate the history and the future of the world’s favorite pastime by letting their kites fly.  It is a month to celebrate the joy and happiness that comes from letting out the line, letting your kite catch the wind, and letting that kite soar high into the sky.

A Great 2015-A Better 2016 on Tap

Scene from 2015 Hang Gliding Spectacular.

2015 was an amazing year on the Outer Banks and for Kitty Hawk Kites. We can’t thank all the wonderful customers who stopped by our stores and made it one of the best years we’ve ever had.

We’ve been adding new experiences—one of our favorites is the replica of the Wright Brothers 1902 glider that is available for flight. Pilots—check this one out. A living history adventure, we’re proud to offer this truly unique flight opportunity.

More new things we started dong this past year—Kitty Hawk Kites sponsored our first ever BrewTag, proving conclusively that beer kegs can fly . . . albeit not well. We are reserving judgment on how well beer can fly, though. After looking over the technical backgrounds of the entrants in the initial competition, there may be room for improvement over the current world BrewTag flight distance of 20’9”.

With Easter coming so early this year—March 27—our first big event is even earlier than usual. Our “Fly into Spring & Easter Eggstravaganza” is that weekend so be sure to check out all the fun.

We’re still finalizing some of the details on our event calendar, but here’s a good start on some of the amazing things we have scheduled for 2016.

What a great day we had last Saturday at BrewTag at the Nags Head Event Site. Beautiful weather, a great turnout and a BrewTag world record flight of 20’9”.

Postponed from its original October 3 date, the 1st Annual BrewTag was a celebration worth waiting for. Lots of local beer on tap, great music from the Jug Tucker Band and Soul House Revival, and it was all going to a good cause—the Rogallo Foundation.

The purpose of the Rogallo Foundation is to preserve the legacy Francis Rogallo and to keep the dream of flight for everyone alive.

The highlight of the day day, of course was the the flight of the BrewTag gliders. OK. Maybe flight isn’t the right word . . . maybe attempts at flight would be better. There was a brisk breeze blowing from the ENE and when the gliders launched from the 20’ tower, the wind got under the nose of the aircraft and they didn’t do so well.

Interestingly the two designs based on Francis Rogallo’s flexible wing did the best with the Loonies on Tap team setting a new BrewTag world record of 20’9” en route  to taking home top honors.

The great entertainment is not done on the Outer Banks even with November approaching. This coming Saturday—that’s Halloween—the Dare County Arts Council’s Artrageous, a celebration of the arts and kids, is happening at Rec Center in Kill Devil Hills.

This is definitely a family-friendly event with lots of creative activities for kids and Kitty Hawk Kites will be there with fun things to do. Festivities kick off at 10 a.m. and finish by 3:00 so there’s plenty of time for the kids to get ready to be ghosts, goblins, ghouls and witches.
